The verb TO SUCKLE, pronounced /ˈsʌkəl/, primarily means to give (a baby or young animal) milk from a breast or udder:

– a mother suckling [=breast-feeding] her baby

Echidnas are mammals. They lay eggs but suckle their young.

Females of this species usually suckle their young only during the first month after birth.

It may also mean to draw milk from a breast or udder:

The piglets were too weak to suckle.

The kittens are very busy. Sometimes there’s not even time to suckle.
