Today we’ll learn some vocabulary that you can use to talk about habitats. A habitat is the place where a plant or animal lives or grows. Animals and plants are very diverse and they live in all imaginable environments, both on land and under water, in hot and dry regions, as well in places where everything is covered by snow and ice.

scrub
land that is covered with grasses, shrubs and small trees
canopy
the highest layer of branches in a forest or on a tree
lodge
the place where a beaver lives
lair
the place where a wild animal sleeps
roost
a place where birds rest or sleep
burrow
a hole or tunnel in the ground that animals like rabbits or foxes make to live in
understory
the vegetative layer and especially the trees and shrubs between the forest canopy and the ground cover
drey
the nest of a tree squirrel or a flying squirrel
glade
a grassy open space in a forest
maquis
the area covered by thick scrubby evergreen underbrush of Mediterranean shores
grove
a small wood or group of trees without underbrush
heath
an area of land that is rich in peat or peaty humus
swamp
land that is always wet and often partly covered with water, usually dominated by woody vegetation
marsh
wetland dominated by grasses and other low plants
