The noun CUSTODY has several meanings. Here are the basic ones:

1) the legal right to take care of a child (for example if his or her parents are divorced):

She wanted to have sole custody of her 4-year-old son.

I think joint custody [=shared by both parents] is best for a child if it’s necessary at all.

The judge refused to grant custody to me.

2) the state of being kept in a prison or jail:

You should have put him in custody, he might be dangerous.

The suspect was taken into custody and they’re going to charge him with burglary.

He’s in police custody, so you don’t have to be afraid of him.

3) the act of protecting or taking care of something (formal):

Does your bank provide custody for valuables?

His money is in the custody of the notary public.

The documents now are in the custody of the government.
