In the previous article we were talking about nouns used as subjects or objects. I also mentioned that nouns can also be used in predicates, so let’s talk about it briefly. Predicate nouns are nouns that follow a linking verb (like to be, to seem, to look, etc.). They rename or re-identify the subject.

Some examples:

Mr. Williams is a blacksmith.

His forge seems a nice, cozy place.

The hammer is an indispensable tool.

Mr. Williams seems a strong man.

He looks like a weight lifter.
