Count nouns are nouns that denote individual items that can be counted with numbers.
Noncount nouns are nouns that can’t be counted as individual items. They often denote substances.
Count Nouns
The characteristics of count nouns are:
– They can be counted with numbers:
twelve chairs
three screens
one table
twelve cups
eight feet
– They can be used with indefinite articles:
a chair
a lamp
a door
a wall
– They can be used in plural:
lamps
many chairs
some cups
several screens
Noncount Nouns
The characteristics of noncount nouns are:
– They often denote substances.
milk
chocolate
dough
juice
butter
– They can’t take an indefinite article:
air
sugar
water
fun
– They are used only in singular:
some juice
milk
a little chocolate
no beer
